Sea Stories

George Clooney plays Billy Tyne, who with all his crew was lost in the sinking of the Andrea Gail in the ‘Perfect Storm’ of 1991, the subject of Sebastian Junger’s book, ‘The Perfect Storm’ and a movie that didn’t quite capture the breadth and depth of the book.  Part of that book, and a minor part in the movie was played (in real life) by Linda Greenlaw, the swordfish boat captain who brought her crew home alive, and the person best placed to judge whether the Andrea Gail was lost to folly or greed, or just fate that had harvested thousands of lives off that coast over the centuries.  So we’ve paired Greenlaw’s ‘The Hungry Ocean’ up with Junger’s book, and a bonus is her story of a quieter life in ‘The Lobster Chronicles’.

As a very special bonus, we have WA author Sarah Drummond’s ‘Salt Stories: Seadogs and Fisherwomen’, recollections of her life working in the commercial fishing industry around the south coast of Western Australia.  One of my favourite ‘best-ever’ books which is why it’s in the Free Library at Blazing Swan – we gift our best books because we hope you might love them as much as we do.

Oh, I have to warn you – the back cover ‘blurb’ on the Lobster Chronicles is complete shit. Some drongo thought it would sell more copies with a Mills & Boon treatment.  Ignore it and enjoy the book.
