Camp Bibliophilia is going to have a crack at calculating our carbon footprint, and posting the results live at the 2025 Blazing Swan event. This will include all our travel to and from Kulin, and our best guess at the original carbon cost of the products we purchase for the library, and the books themselves. There’ll also be a calculation of the cost-avoided by producing (we hope) all of our own electricity using solar. And yes, we’ll account for the carbon cost of producing the panels and batteries.
Frankly, we’ll never get to carbon zero. The reason is mostly the distance we travel each year – although moving to and living in Kullin is an attractive option… Anyhow, what we can’t reduce we can certainly offset. We were pleased to see Blazing Swan had an opt-in carbon offset on their tickets last year. If it’s there again this year we’d encourage event participants to consider using it. Camp Bibliophilia will have a look at where we can bank our carbon debits, and let you know closer to the event. Our preference will be for something local – and ethical!
We’ll also be providing a few answers about carbon dioxide (because we’re a library and that’s what libraries do) and running a little demonstration where we weigh carbon dioxide, and show you what a tonne of it looks like. No special goggles required, but feel free to bring your own white lab coat!
